The way I see it is that a space marine (especially the Iron Warriors and Night Lords) degenerates to mutations either through embracing them or being overexposed to warp energie... For the rest they remain normal (evil) Astartes.

Ehm! I beg to differ. The Iron Warriors where since the Heresy like the Word Bearers the largest and most organised Legions. But the Sons of Olympia got a great advantage. They recently plundered Hydra Cordatus one of the only two geneseed storage facilities. In other words the Word Bearers are vastly out numbered and out gunned ;P

But I have to admit that the Word Bearers are very close to the top on my list.

But hey remember where the Iron Warriors are numerous and well equipped the Word Bearers are unmatched in there understanding and manipulating of Chaos.
